Beurs van Berlage
Berlages idealistic and progressive idea about the organization of society is reflected in his architecture. The brick are a symbol for society: where one brick stood for the individual and is null and void, a multitude of bricks -the society- is a power.
The future plan of Berlage for the Beurs building was a folk palace, where art, economy and society could converge. This plan came from his idea of a revolution, where capitalism would find its end.
The first came true. The second not.
The pursuit of profit maximization of individuals is an important value of capitalism and goes very often to the detriment of the environment. This can affect the whole society, and seriously affect the survival of the now so prosperous folk palace.
Will that one brick still be stronger than its multiplicity?
